On the weekend I received this comment from Release in relation to an older post;

What the hell are you talking about when you say that giger’s alien, and lebbeus’ work are alike- while at the same time proclaiming that, that for some odd reason, you have ‘the eye’. I see this as total babbling. In Lebbeus’ work- he creates rigid forms, usually with recognizable sharp points, that seem to emerge randomly from a form at first, but are in harmoney. In Giger’s work that you showed here, there is a harmony that is clearly visible, with repeating shapes and design elements. If you are saying the two are similar, then any artist/designer’s work, whether modern or of old, are all similar.
For some reason, your statement pissed me off to no extent. On top of it all, you tried to pull the whole “i know what I’m talking about” deal.

On Sunday I took it upon myself to edit this blog and rid past posts of too much unjust self-proclamation and vague topics my experience doesn’t cover. I suppose it’s a remnant of starting any type of publication, it starts being interesting not when you put stuff in, but when you take the shit out.

There is always going to be a few shit posts, and in all honesty I have to say I find the crisp sting of criticism leads to improvement. Though on criticism, in no way do I agree with Release’s deconstruction of the topic. It makes as much sense as my post did (none at all, that’s why its not up anymore) and he/she spelt harmony incorrectly.

From now forward, I’ll try to stay within familiar territory.

In other news, Ten Commandments for Christian Bloggers has been released.
A common problem for Architects dealing with residential projects. Ahh to bite the hand that feeds…

MONEY

Most that use Architectural services in a Residential capacity have money. Usually a lot of it. Hence being able to afford the 8-12% (sometimes more) premium applied to the project. Because of this, there is a tendency to “lean on” the design. It is hard to do your job when you are being leant on. It gives you a bitter taste in your mouth.

STYLE

The wealthy tend to be “stylistically” challenged. Style to them is a derivative of a trend in a magazine, or many clippings from magazines. Armed with subscriptions, these people seek a fusion Victorian, Classical, Romantic, English Garden, Modernist, Contemporary and whatever else they can find or have been told about. The Architect’s job is not to fuse, but to create a well thought out solution to a situation. What was that Architect’s fee going towards again?

LITIGIOUS

The Wealthy tend to be litigious. Threats of legal action toward the Builder make for a hard job when you are stuck as the Administrator of a contract that in most situations one party doesn’t fully understand.

GOLD TRIM

The Wealthy tend to look for the “gold trim”. The extra that the others don’t have. It may be a cantilever, it may be a shingled roof, it might actually be golden trim. Its amazing how important that first party can be. Be thorough with the snag list.

A lesson to learn from all this? Be careful, residential projects will always span a minimum of 3 years. 3 years can be a long time, depending on how old you are.

DISCLAIMER** In no way does this post relate to any of the fantastic clients I’ve worked for in the past. Its been a pleasure.

A self-proclaimed man-of-the-hand (to quote “I do not use a computer other than word processing and probably will never.”), this exhibition appears as a wonderful display of design-process and its relationship with an exquisitely crafted build-process adapted precisely to its environment.

One final quote from Glenn:

I have established a miniscule practice. I have no staff whatsoever. No secretary, no typist, no tea maker, no draftsperson, no computer operator and a body of clients waiting for work in the order of two years.

The method of practice compliments the project.

May 20th Landscape of Clouds also got me thinking about the studio with a great title that I never took either.

This post is starting from “transient, vicious, ominous & beautiful” (urban) cloud.

Sometimes, in an urban context, the clouds are of the few elements of the natural landscape that remains for us to bring to a project. (It´s not often you can´t find a piece of sky out of the window).

Despite risk of reductionism, or missing the point about ´tacit architecture´ (as oulined in the Landscape of Clouds), this post presents a short story of a journey from one side of a window to the other via company analysis statistics, Shakespeare, to an Argentenian artist in MACBA, to staring out the window (I need more skylights too, Dan), and finally back to two clouds one abstract and static, one transient and moving: in fact - already disappeared from view.

The client was Neometrics, specialists in analytic intelligence. They are based in Madrid, and required a new office fitout in Barcelona (“Analyze to decide. Decide to Create Value” )

(1) Data analysis language: A diagram that explains social network analysis (2) Gego at MACBA, January 2007.

The architects were Calderon-Folch Arquitectes and the project is travesura 2. The fitout is finished and remaining is this big, long, blank wall… from the door to the window…

What could happen between the door and the window?

What is already happening on the other side of the window?

An idea began simply with some movement. An increase in density of lines, or form, or something on the wall as it reaches for the light from the window.

Arriving at the window it meets the landscape and chooses one element, to mirror, echoe, abstract and reinterpret. The window became the interface where reality became stylised form…

Enter Hamlet & Polonius, stage right:

The job progressed in a couple of quick sporadic jumps, between other things in the office.

Until a 1:1 test piece was produced: 1.5mm galvanized wire, heat straightened, soldered, and/or bent at the junctions, and then the production of a 10 metre long, silver lined cloud began.

Finally it´s a beautiful piece of sky on the inside of the window. And a nice way to learn that every cloud has a silver lining.

lunes 22.46pm | Tuesday 4.47am

The chosen moment to describe with words and photos, some tenuous threads between 2 cities. Well, official links - no. Just the ones I see at this moment, in a search for meaning. Nothing revolutionary, after all, in the notion that two cities described and disputed as Mediterranean… might have a few common points worth noting.

The stuff of architecture we were trained in provides a starting point. Light. Form. Street. People.

Light: We have the same types of light to play with.

Harsh light. White light. Light to be filtered. Light for silouette.

Notes on beauty:

Noticing that there is a fragility between being surrounded by beautiful things and learning to see the beauty in ordinary things. This is a clue to being inspired…

I think this thread is something of Robert Venturi and Simon Anderson and perhaps José Antonio Coderch. But that needs investigation.

Post-Script on people in architecture: If you remove humanity from a project, why build it at all? I´m going with the suspicion that humanity is in all facets and all phases of a project. Looking for humanity,

could be as easy as inviting it.

Don´t you love the idea that we could harness the mess of peoples dreams, mistakes and emotions and put them in a building?

I don´t know - surely without that, a building can only be object less beautiful, less functional and more of an aberration on the landscape than what would have grown there by itself. So, its my belief that you squash people and their mess out of the process at your peril.

So, never quite got around to mention “form”. Light. Beauty. Humanity. Is there a case for making form, simply incidental, and subservient to these other preoccupations? Or is this exactly the type of introspective garbage to be left to those people who spend their evening writing blogs about ephemeral things, while the real architects prepare for the next day of form.

Ok, next entry about form.

I remember whilst studying back in the early 2000’s, an Academic by the name of Julian Raxworthy was running a Landscape Architecture class, or a studio, on the Landscape of Clouds.

I wasn’t enrolled in this class, but it interested me. As per usual I only really paid attention briefly, enough to pick up on the title, and ponder a little on what it meant. I should have read on. There is a plethora of these moments that litter my memory, and all I am left with is the ability to draw my own conclusions from a title I remember from a distant time. I suppose its enough sometimes. I read other things. As the other day, whilst skim reading BLDGBLOG I came across the more than stunning images that are in this post, and it triggered my memory and the thought that if Clouds form landscapes, then these landscapes could be captured in building or landscape projects. A transient piece of landscape that is forever still, vicious, ominous and beautiful. Nothing is more relaxing than staring at the sky. I need more skylights.

It also triggered a plethora of questions relating to; the indeterminant nature of Nature. Thoughts on manicured gardens, macro landscapes and the image, Gaia and micro landscapes and control (e.g. courtyards).

It then led me to think a little more about another question, “can Architecture (or Landscape Architecture) be taught?”. My answer is no. I believe it can’t be taught, but the teaching of Architecture is essential to Architecture itself. Architecture is tacit then… but if it is tacit, how can you teach it?

I was fortunate enough to work with Julian Raxworthy, Rene Van Meeuwen and Laura Rossi as well as other Landscapers from the ALVA school a couple of semester’s later than the Cloud studio on the entry to the National Arboreturm Competition, and was really fond of JR’s and RvM’s approach. RvM went on to be my honour’s supervisor. I got to explore the project tacitly. To apply one’s self to a project or a part of a project. I came to the conclusion that you aren’t a designer until they are completely your own designs and ideas that are on the page, in the music, in the product etc.etc. That is what I took from that experience.

So there you go. I came into this post at cloud, and left on tacit knowledge.

Photos by Carlos Gutierrez for UPI, I saw these on BLDGBLOG

There are arguably many advantages of using archiCAD to generate design drawings, and with every release more and more tools that help the process seem to appear(AC 11 has the interior elevation function). One process that needs some serious work in my opinion is the creation of drawn Door and Window Schedules. ArchiCAD generates the schedules with an array of their attributes, but one problem is with producing scaled elevations of the doors/windows with dimensions and any other notations that you may want to add.I scoured the online forums, and found two relatively simple workarounds that I find may or may not help. Number 1. The copy and paste technique.quoting veteran forum member “Rob”

this is just a note for people who are desperately trying to get properly drawn and dimensioned door and window schedules out of AC. a workaround that I did not know about since it has been taken out from AC10 but the functionality is back with AC11. get d/w listed in the schedule, use ctrl+C (copy) (no need to select anything) and paste it in a worksheet or detail window for further editing (exploded into lines and text at scale!). Not really a bi-directional VB approach but at least you can use a sort of semi-automatic procedure for gathering all openings in the schedule in one go for further editing I have somehow missed out on this feature in AC11 and rediscover it today with a help from GS Budapest. My thanks go there. Hopefully it will help anybody who is in despair as it did work for me…
